Glenda has truly enjoyed teaching her clients over the years - all of the children and adults.  They have become her dearest friends, whom she has treasured. They are what she lives for.  She trusts that she has imparted to them a love of music as well as a sense of positivity, fun and humor. Teaching is to inspire people to be the best they can be. Glenda strives for perfectionism and endeavors to impart this attribute in her teaching. Music Teaching is a most wonderful career and future generations who follow in Glenda's footsteps will be very fortunate indeed.

MUSIC TUITION & PERFORMANCE CORRELATES WITH HIGHER ORDER THINKING, ANALYSIS & DECISION MAKING,
AS WELL AS HIGHER PERCEPTUAL SKILLS & ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT.

SINGING TUITION

Glenda specializes in teaching beginner adults who try to convince her that they cannot sing!

Glenda also specializes in teaching and inspiring Primary School children how to sing on pitch, with and without an accompanying instrument or instrumental backing. Educational benefits of children learning singing are numerous. They include:

•    learning how to read words at an earlier age
•    improving the child’s reading ability
•    improving spelling ability
•    learning how to break words up into syllables
•    how to speak better
•    builds confidence
•    how to present publicly
•    the why and how of learning
•    how to be happy and positive
•    learning morals and ethics portrayed in the words of well chosen songs.

Dr. Gottfried Schlaug has pioneered singing as a therapeutic method. One striking example of this is the use of singing to restore speech, in the Music and Neuroimaging Lab at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

VIOLIN TUITION

Violin is the most inspiring instrument. One-on-one tuition only is offered for adults and children. For centuries, the learning of a music instrument has only been taught one-on-one. This is not only for beginners but also for intermediate and advanced instrumentalists. Children who play violin in school orchestras or who receive group tuition at school often receive private violin tuition as well.

Group tuition is a poor substitute for learning a music instrument. It may be cheaper, but you will find the short term and long term value will be wanting; and it will cost more in the long run at the expense of the child’s learning experience, music education and love for the instrument.

Only with individual tuition is a child able to learn to play the violin in tune, to hear sounds clearly and correct their pitch. Then they are able to fully love their playing and progress to their full potential. Learning to love violin is learning how to play in tune as well as applying all the expressive nuances of bowing.

GUITAR TUITION

Children and adults love playing Guitar for fun and entertainment. Glenda teaches all styles of guitar music from pop and musicals to classical.

Beginners learn how to read music notes and symbols; how to strum different strumming patterns; as well as playing and understanding chords and rhythms.

A variety of books are used in combination with Glenda’s guitar exercises, lesson structuring and music knowledge.

Adults who have only played by ear before, or who have never learnt to read music, can expand their repertoire, music knowledge and song writing horizons. Please check with Glenda before your purchase of a guitar, unless of course you already have two or three!

Live Online Video Conferencing Lessons are offered for clients who live outback on cattle stations or isolated properties and for clients who live off the coast on tropical islands.

PIANO / KEYBOARD TUITION

Acoustic Piano - Love the sound of true ‘keyboard’ playing. Discover your heart and learn how to play the most harmonious sonorous instrument ever invented. It is like playing the whole orchestra of instruments by one person. It has the biggest range of sound of all music instruments - you can play chords with several notes per hand. A piano is also a beautiful furniture piece in any home, where the family can gather around and play and sing music and children can escape the radiation from looking at a screen! Ask Glenda for the best advice before your purchase your Piano - Mozart and Beethoven’s choice of music instrument!

Electric Keyboard / Electric Piano - Since the invention of electric keyboards, this has often been the cheaper choice for families when children or adults first start learning. It has also been the choice of families with limited space, or those who may need to move house more often than others. Remember, electric keyboards have a rather limited lifespan. Ask Glenda before you purchase an electric keyboard and she will give you the best advice.

Pre-Loved Acoustic Pianos - When children first start to learn, the other cheaper choice is to purchase a pre-loved piano! These are often under $800.00 and are quite good for beginners. This year and last year, Glenda had very reasonable free acoustic pianos offered to her for one of her students. However, the best option by far is to buy a brand new acoustic piano. This purchase is an intergenerational investment and can be handed down to grandchildren. Sometimes grandparents also assist in the purchase of an acoustic piano. Never buy a pre-loved piano before consulting Glenda.

MUSIC NEUROSCIENCE

Dr. Aniruddh Patel - Professor of Psychology at Tufts University, (a private research University in Boston, USA),
Dr. Patel has written a book, an intellectual tour de force, titled Music, Language & the Brain.
Cognitive Neuroscience

“Music neuroscience... we ... give ... training in music and then measure how their cognition changes and how their brain changes ...
in terms of ... processing [and] ... structure.” Dr. Aniruddh Patel.

Patel says that developing our brains’ musical networks may very well enhance our ability to process speech.
“... known to promote what’s called brain plasticity, the changing of the brain’s structure as a function of experience.” Dr. Patel.

“... learning to play a musical instrument does have impacts on other abilities.” Dr. Aniruddh Patel.
These include speech perception, the ability to understand emotions in the voice and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Dr. Nanine Gaab - Professor of Pediatrics - Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, USA
Neuropsychologist
Cognitive Neuroscience & Executive Functioning Skills

Dr. Nadine Gaab leads a team of researchers studying children’s brain development at Boston Children’s Hospital.

“There are a lot of different brain systems involved in successfully playing even a small musical piece: your auditory system, your motor system, your emotional system, your executive function system; ... almost like a musical ensemble.” Dr. Nadine Gaab.

“if you play a musical instrument ... you have better reading skills, better math skills ... ” Dr. Gaab.

In one of her published studies, Gaab delineated a connection – in both children and adults – between learning to play an instrument and improved executive functioning, like problem-solving, switching between tasks and focus.

Gaab and her scientists watched for activity in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, known to be the seat of executive functioning. “ ... musically trained children ... have better executive functioning skills ... and have more activation in these prefrontal areas compared to their peers.” Dr. Nadine Gaab.

MEDICAL ISSUES & LEARNING A MUSIC INSTRUMENT

Historically, medical issues were somewhat unrelated to the learning of a musical instrument because such issues were not common in children’s lives. Once upon a time, it was almost unheard of that a child would have Cancer, Autism or Central Auditory Processing Disorder. This is not the case today. It is now internationally recognized among the academic world that learning a music instrument can be a significant and successful learning tool for:

•   increasing the linking of auditory and visual information
•    making interhemispheric communication more efficient
•    developing fine motor skills and bimanual coordination
•    improving the auditory concentration span
•    the development of auditory memory
•    enhancing the retention of information
•    improving the memory trace
•    being more visually and aurally vigilant
•    increasing binaural integration
•    increasing verbal to motor skills during verbal counting of music beats while playing the instrument
•    improving multi-sensory integration and left and right brain hemispherical communication
•    boosting self confidence
•    learning about the learning process itself while reinforcing how to learn

Competitions, Concerts & Exams

Children or adults who work towards a Family Concert, local Eisteddfod, School Talent Quest, Birthday or Anniversary Concert or an Examination will always be rewarded for their diligence and commitment.

Many life skills are developed including patience, humility and confidence as well as being willing to congratulate another person who may have worked harder and deserved a higher result or prize.

The reward will sometimes be lots of praise or a Certificate, maybe a photograph in the media or even a trophy. But most of all you will be happy that you have achieved your goal.
